An ancient city with a young and innovative soul

The City of Grosseto wins the “European green pioneer of smart tourism 2024” in Brussels. This is an award designed by the European Commission to promote smart and sustainable tourism for smaller destinations.

The award decrees smaller destinations that have implemented successful strategies to promote sustainable tourism through green transition practices.

It is currently funded under the Cosme program after the preparatory action proposed by the European Parliament.

There were four finalist locations in the 2024 competition, including Grevena (Greece); Grosseto (Italy); the UNESCO Karawanken-Karavanke World Geopark (between Austria and Slovenia); and Valongo (Portugal).

Central to Grosseto’s sustainability efforts is a commitment to preserving its natural setting. About 30 percent of the city’s protected area is dedicated to agriculture and serves as a base for agritourism initiatives.

The Maremma Park, for example, boasts 32 high-quality agritourism initiatives suitable for all ages and abilities. Throughout the year, the park offers cooking activities, tutorials on harvesting and processing local raw materials, tasting workshops, and bike rides for enthusiasts. One of the cornerstones of Grosseto’s sustainability ethic is mobility. The park seamlessly combines cultural, archaeological, scientific research and sustainable tourism projects, setting a precedent for responsible exploration.

As part of the city’s commitment to accessibility, Grosseto has an integrated bicycle mobility system and shuttle service, which can be booked through an app. In addition, the city has made beaches, monuments, and the historic center accessible through initiatives such as “Sea for All” and “GRITACCESS.”

Grosseto’s future plans include a green expanse to provide a haven for residents and tourists to jog, walk, bike and relax. In addition, the Grosseto Urban Trekking project, a regional initiative to promote slow tourism, art, and local history, aims to create a network of walking and biking trails connecting the entire province, inspiring green mobility and responsible exploration.

A city accessible to large urban areas

The city of Grosseto lies on the Rome-Livorno road axis and is connected to the large urban areas of Siena and Florence via the E78.

With regard to the Rome-Livorno axis (the so-called Tirrenica), the Italian government has announced that in 2025 work will begin on upgrading and securing one of the territory’s main road axes, with plans to upgrade, among other things, the Grosseto south-San Pietro in Palazzi section and the central section from Ansedonia to Grosseto.

As for the Siena-Grosseto link, work is under way to upgrade the E78 to four lanes .

The work specifically concerns a section of about 11.8 kilometers and affects the municipalities of Sovicille, Murlo and Monticiano.

The work, for a total investment of 195 million euros, consists of upgrading the SS223 “di Paganico” to four lanes by building a new carriageway alongside the existing one.

Grosseto also has a civil airport (Grosseto Airport-Seam Spa), which currently serves private flights, with a very strong charter traffic of about 1,500 charter flights a year for business and tourist visits.
